"On June 1, 1969, Denmark became the first western country to legalize the sale of pornography to adults." So begins Pornography In Denmark, Filmmaker ALEX deRENZY's fascinating documentary of Danish permissiveness circa 1969.
Taking advantage of the Supreme Court's "redeeming social relevance" clause from 1966, deRenzy examines adult bookstores, lingerie clubs, a porno movie set, live sex shows, and Sex '69 - the first Scandinavian sex fair - to reveal to American audiences what they otherwise couldn't see.
Along the way, deRenzy questions Danish citizens and tourists - "Is this the line for Lenin's tomb?" - for their opinions on legalized porn, and interviews a young woman (nude, of course) who appears in 16mm loops with her boyfriend.
The first film featuring hardcore sex to be reviewed by The New York Times
, Pornography in Denmark
opened the floodgates to similar features with titles such as Sexual Freedom in Denmark
and Wide Open Copenhagen '70
It's also credited with moving hardcore porn out of the storefront theatres and into more respectable uptown venues.
