A wave of sinister crimes sweep across Berlin, and Inspector Lohmann (OTTO WERNICKE) believes that the sudden madness of former policeman, Hofmeister (KARL MEIXNER), is somehow related to it all. The clue "Mabuse" keeps appearing, and the likely suspect would be Dr. Mabuse (RUDOLF KLEIN-ROGGE), a master of disguises and hypnosis, but he's been confined to an insane asylum for ten years. Mabuse's own schizophrenia causes him to go into a trance-like state, and from his cell, he writes pages of gibberish that give instructions for how to commit complex crimes. But even more baffling, Mabuse's "empire of crime" somehow continues after his death, perpetuating an orgy of wanton destruction.
Also known as The Testament of Dr. Mabuse the film was the second of Fritz Lang's Dr. Mabuse trilogy.
