Is that the best title ever created for a nudie film or what? With Boin-n-g!, HERSCHELL GORDON LEWIS bode farewell to the nudie-cuties via this semi-autobiographical comedy filled with sly comments on the sexploitation industry and those who populate it.
Suffering through a double-bill of The Adventures of Lucky Pierre and Natureís Playmates at the Studio Theatre (where a free tube of sun tan lotion is given away to patrons!), best buddies Al Harding (WILLIAM KERWIN, here billed as "Thomas Sweetwood") and Bob Stevens (BILL JOHNSON) decide they could do better and, just like that, enter the nudie film business. After overcoming the initial tribulations of hiring equipment and finding the right girls, they rent out a country cottage for the weekend and begin work on their epic, "Natureís Nudniks."
The blissfully inexperienced duo are joined by gauche cameraman Schmurtz (ROBBIE BEE), and quickly discover that anything that can go wrong, does: an afternoonís filming has to be redone when itís discovered that no one has loaded the camera with film, the lens cap is forgotten to be removed, and the lovely girls sit their nude, top-heavy bodies down in a field of poison ivy.
With their epic finally in the can, the nightmare task of editing begins. Since we donít get to see any of the finished film, we can only guess as to just how inept the finished product is. Even Al and Bob donít get time to look at it before screening the film for skinflick distributor Sonny Halitosis (comedian LAWRENCE J. ABERWOOD, acting as "Lawrence Wood"), who exclaims, "Iíll take it! It was the worst picture I ever saw! Itíll be a smash at the box office!" Al and Bob exit the screening triumphantly, raring to begin work on their next nudie blockbuster...
What sets Boin-n-g! apart from the already overcrowded nudie-cutie scene at the time are the genuinely likeable performances from the two male leads who exhibit a strong comic chemistry between them. This is one of the best roles Bill Kerwin ever played for Herschell, and Robbie Bee is also good as Schmurtz, constantly bragging about his experiences with "Rock," "Charlton," and "C.B." And, as always, the original organ score by Lewis is an absolute pearler.
Produced by DAVID F. FRIEDMAN, and also known as (brace yourselves) Untamed Women in Nature in the Raw (huh?!). From a 35mm print filmed in "Unconcealed color." ó John Harrison, Reel Wild Cinema
