DIRTY GIRTY FROM HARLEM U.S.A. - DVD-R

Gertie La Rue (Francine Everette) is the biggest thing to hit "Rinidad Island" since the last hurricane. Gertie is a famous entertainer from Harlem, on the run after two-timing her boyfriend Al (John King). She wastes no time in heating up the island by drinking and flirting with all the men and preparing her striptease act for the Diamond Palace. Missionary Jonathan Christian (Alfred Hawkins) tries to prevent Gertie’s show from going on while fighting his own attraction to the wanton woman from the big city.

Spencer Williams replaced the first director on this "original" story and screen adaptation by True T. Thompson - actually a loose remake of Somerset Maugham’s Rain. Williams captures the seediness of the remote island and invests the picture with the sultry atmosphere of repressed passion. Francine Everette gives a tart performance as Gertie and in a unique bit of casting, director Williams does a gender-bender, playing Old Hager the "voodoo woman." Filmed in Dallas for Alfred Sack.
